My practice has been using digital radiography for three years, but just recently switched to the Schick 33 sensors. We learned a lot along the way. For my peers considering digital, my advice is to ask these important questions when considering your options.
- “How much will it really cost me?” Digital radiography is an expensive investment. But don’t be lured by the most inexpensive sensor on the market. Examine the total cost of ownership; for example, do you have to buy accessories separately, what is the average sensor life, what does the warranty entail?
- “How can the sensor improve diagnostics?” Examine the sensor’s capabilities. This includes everything from resolution and clinical settings to enhancement tools. At this point, the cost of ownership becomes moot because it enables you to see, diagnose and treat more, so it ultimately pays for itself.
- “What happens if there’s an issue with my cord?” Oftentimes, if the cord goes on your sensor, you have to get a new device. The Schick 33’s interchangeable cable means you don’t have to miss a beat.
- “Do you deliver on your customer service promise?” Service and support are important if you experience an issue with your sensor. Not all brands live up to their promises. I have waited more than an hour on the phone with previous manufacturers. With Sirona and Patterson, that wait is down to no more than a matter of minutes.
- “Will the technology integrate with my software?” You shouldn’t expect disruption to your practice or patients. Why buy sensors that require a separate bridge to the software? It’s easier when a device integrates with your practice management system so you don’t have to depend on numerous programs. The Schick 33 operates seamlessly with Eaglesoft software.
When I first went digital, I got caught in vendors’ empty promises and hard-to-break contracts. The second time around, I asked the right questions—and Sirona Dental had all the right answers.
